Later this month, I’ll be honored to join the first Caribbean Summit of Political and Business Leaders in the British Virgin Isles. Hosted by Premier Orlando Smith of the British Virgin Islands, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell of Grenada and Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group, the Summit will allow leaders to exchange ideas, share experiences and successes, and strengthen collaboration on conservation across the region.

Your sunscreen is killing baby coral reefs

The researchers found concentrations of oxybenzone in the US Virgin Islands to be 23 times higher than the minimum considered toxic to corals. We’ve read reports that it can cause cancer (and that sunscreen doesn’t really work to prevent skin cancer ), but yet – doctors say you need sunscreen in the sun. While the daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is widely acknowledged as essential to skin cancer prevention, it is hurting the sea.

IUCN: Caribbean Coral Reefs Declining Significantly

Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Florida Keys have less than fifteen percent of the reefs covered in live coral. Recent studies have found that the world’s coral are in considerable danger of disappearing due to a number of environmental pressures. These pressures include fishing, pollution, disease, global warming and ocean acidification. Overall, an estimated seventy-five percent of the world’s coral reefs are at risk.

Coral in the Florida Keys, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam are already showing signs of bleaching. The National Climatic Data Center, which is overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recently announced that the world’s oceans experienced record temperatures this July. The ocean temperatures have been recorded for approximately 130 years and this past July was the warmest of any of the months previously recorded.
