In a disposable society, to repair is to rebel

From consumer society to maker society

Green (Living) Review

We must return from a consumer and consumption orientated society return to, or transition and develop, however one may wish to put it, into a maker society where, once again, people are prepared to make things and enjoy making things rather than just consuming things. The entire world needs to change to a new society but it will only do so if we, the people, actually change. And it not just liberates the individual, but the entire society.

The Big Society

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The coalition government in Britain under the Cameron-Clegg leadership is talking about the “Big Society” all the time ever since they formed the government after the general election in 2010. Talk about the “Big Society” is increasing more and more in the beginning of 2011 as the government is cutting is cutting back services on a national and local level due to spending cuts and the attempt of tackling the deficit in the national coffers.

The Problem With Society Isn’t Greed

Green (Living) Review

greed societyGreed Is a Symptom of a Deep Need Going Unfulfilled A lot of people reacted to my comment on Facebook the other day that greed is more a symptom than a cause of our current system, with all its inequities. I’m asked, What is the cause of greed? First I’ll say what I think greed is: Greed is the insatiable desire for that which one doesn’t really need, or in amounts beyond one’s needs.

Are power hierarchies inevitable in human society?

Low Impact

These are the hierarchies I’m talking about – where orders go down and money goes up (at least in today’s society – in other societies, such as empires or feudalism, it’s other people’s work, or tributes of some sort that are controlled, rather than money).

THE POWER OF SIDE EFFECTS: TOWARDS A COLLABORATIVE SOCIETY

Green (Living) Review

Although less visible, they have the power to profoundly upset the current social order and are the key to what, at OuiShare, we call a collaborative society. It’s time to explore what this collaborative society we started talking about a few months ago is. The “collaborative economy” and “collaborative society” approaches are peculiarly different: the latter is prescriptive while the former is descriptive. collaborative society green living society

Today's throwaway and buy new society

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The intro – so to speak – below was posted on a Facebook forum by a lady who was rather disgusted, as we can see from what she writes, by the attitude of the woman, or women, concerned: “ Overheard while walking the dog : 'Oh, look at that, the button's just come off my coat, I'll have to get a new one now' I turned to watch while the dog had stopped for a sniff. She had the button in her hand! Her friend was sympathizing with her about how badly things are made etc.

Re-thinking our ‘built to fail’ society

Green (Living) Review

In-built obsolescence may seem a forgivable quirk of the modern technology many of us love, but it has a force of its own, placing us on a wheel of consumer slavery. But there is another way When I first heard of planned obsolescence – products being purposefully built to fail in order to fuel our buying more and more – I felt shock and disbelief.

Our society has lost sight of what is truly important in life

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Our society has indeed lost sight of what is truly important in life and it is high time to find it again. Everything is being geared to making lots of money and then still more, often at the detriment of others in society. children crafts life lifeskills society

Audubon Society: Climate Change Sending Birds North

Eco Friendly Daily

The Audubon Society has done a 40 year study regarding bird migratory tendencies. Past studies in the eastern part of the United States have concluded the same results, however the Audubon Society tracked more species over a larger area. Overall, the Audubon Society covered 305 bird species’ migration habits from 1996 to 2005. The study has concluded that many North American bird species are choosing to spend winters farther north than ever before.

Using the Tragedy of the Commons to the benefit of society

Environmental Economics

In a different context ( Asian Carp ), I have advocated for taking advantage of the Tragedy of the Commons to eliminate invasive species.    The principle is simple:  Given the proper incentives and open access, anglers/hunters/gatherers will overfish/overhunt/strip a common property resource into non-existence.

Liverpool pulls out of Big Society drive

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The leader of Liverpool City Council recently has written to Prime Minister David Cameron informing him that the authority is pulling out of the Government's Big Society plans. The Underappreciation of Rest in Today’s Society

Green (Living) Review

“What is without periods of rest will not endure.” Ovid Recently, I spent a few weeks on vacation. The time was filled with travel, reconnecting with family, playing golf, swimming, sleeping, and reading. As you can probably imagine, it was quite enjoyable. But more than that, it was desperately needed. Consider the benefits that rest offers: a healthier body. more balance. less stress. deeper relationships. better opportunity to evaluate life’s direction. a new, fresh outlook.

Let us build a new society

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) We need a new kind of society; a society where people matter and also Mother Earth. But, this new kind of society must be a society that is based on voluntarity and not on government degree. For both the sake of the Planet and of the people we need a new society, one that is less exploitative, one where people and Mother Nature are being considered first and foremost.

Democratic participation means to be an active member of society

Green (Living) Review

The real true meaning of democratic participation is to be an active member of society, to actively help in its restructuring and thereby to understand its multiplicity as a chance. To this end people must come to understand that it is they who should be in charge of their lives and of society and not government, central [federal], regional or even local. For all this to work we need to have an open society where everyone can participate regardless of age, gender, class, race, etc.

Biking Could Change the Very Fabric of American Society

Urban sprawl, limited public transportation options and lapses in pedestrian-friendly travel routes encourage most commuters to reach for a set of car keys when heading out to run errands or travel to work. Very few Americans commute to work via bike, despite the associated health and environmental benefits. Increased cost savings. Automobiles are expensive.

Whatever happened to Localism and the Big Society?

Green (Living) Review

By Michael Smith (Veshengro) Much has been made in the days when the Con-Dem coalition took power of localism and of the Big Society but both are very much falling by the wayside. The charities – in fact all charities – that would have been the cornerstones, foundation and operators of the Big Society have their funding slashed and the people of the UK, who are feeling the pinch of the economic crisis and the austerity measures also have no means of giving to those charities.

The Rise (& Fall?) Of Consumer Society in the Middle East

When we think of consumerism and the consumer society, the Middle East is not the first thing to come to mind. Even so, over the last half a century the region has been transformed into a consumer society. It was the perfect example as it cut across various social classes and so it was a great example of the way that consumerism entered into Egyptian society. These were developed during the oil boom which was a linchpin of the consumer society.
