The VW microbus concept has resurfaced after a decade since being canceled. Now, it’s been reborn as the VW Bulli and will even make an appearance at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The VW Bulli will bring the legendary VW microbus into the current millennium and from this blogger’s perspective, the concept looks fantastic. The Bulli concept will house a 113-hp electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

Canadian Condo Owner Not Allowed to Charge Chevy Volt Electric Car

In Ottawa, Canada, a Mike Nemat is fighting with his condominium complex about charging his electric car, a Chevy Volt. The residents of the complex split the electric bill for the whole complex, so they do not want all the owners to have to pay for his car. He is arguing that charging the car only costs around $1 a night to charge. In addition to that, many of the other condo owners do not care if he charges his car.

Honda Civic is 2012 Green Car of the Year

And it’s not even 2012 yet. The 2012 Green Car of the Year award didn’t go to an electric or diesel vehicle (as it has the past few years) but instead was taken by none other than the Honda Civic Natural Gas. The Civic beat out the Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi i, Toyota Prius V and the Volkswagen Passat TDI. Green Car Journal hands out the award and its rules state that the GCOTY needs to have a “quantifiable environmental achievement.”

The 2012 Chevrolet Volt electric car will finally be available in seven major markets across Canada this fall, with the starting price of $41,545. Many are complaining about the price, but experts assure that the benefits of mass production in the next couple years will be reflected in the sticker price.

Porsche 918 RSR Hybrid Racer

Porsche recently showed off their 918 Hybrid Racer in Detroit. The two-seater mid-engine coupé 918 RSR is a development from the 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder combined in a super sports car, with a V8 engine taken from Porsche’s Spyder coupe that gets 563 horsepower at 10,300 RPM. There are two electric motors driving the front wheels, which kicks the horsepower up to 767.

Mission announced their Mission R electric superbike at the Longbeach Motorshow late last year. The bike features a 141hp electric motor and a 14kWh lithium-ion battery system. “The heart of the Mission R is an advanced MissionEVT powertrain that packs 141hp and 14.4 kWh of energy storage in a package smaller than a 600cc sportbike. The liquid-cooled AC Induction motor produces 115 ft.

President Barack Obama, seen above at the Washington Auto Show Tuesday, hailed the triumphant rebound of the U.S. auto industry. Obama sat inside a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi , which won this year’s Green Car Vision Award , among some gas guzzling trucks, SUVs and muscle cars made by General Motors, Chrysler and Ford. The U.S. auto industry is back,” Obama stated to reports, adding that it’s was worth remembering that there were some leaders “willing to let this industry die.”

The Nissan Leaf has won Car of the Year Japan for 2011-2012, according to the executive committee for the award announced at the Tokyo Auto Show. The Leaf is Nissan’s first mass-produced electric car and since then they’ve moved just over 20,000 vehicles. The EV is powered by lithium ion batteries and can reach 200 kilometers for every charge.

Here’s yet another reason to go electric – the forthcoming Tesla Model S is not only environmentally friendly and cheaper to operate than its gas powered compatriots, but it’s also accelerating in a class of cars like the Chevy Corvette, Audio R8 and the Porsche 911 which it recently proved faster than by two tenths of second with a 4.5 second run from zero to 60 mph. The Model S will be available for the drooling public in 2013 with base model prices beginning at $50,000.

Another Month of Nissan Leaf Outselling Chevy Volt

There still isn’t much in the way of options for entry level electric car buyers out there. There’s the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt and of the two it seems to be Nissan that’s stolen the hearts of electric car buyers. August numbers are in and the Nissan Leaf sold 1,362 while the Chevy Volt sold a modest 302. That makes five months in a row that the Leaf has come out on top over the Volt.

GM to Launch New EN-V Podcar by 2020

GM has been tinkering away on the next generation of EN-V two-person electric podcar which it hopes to start selling to the public by 2020. EN-V secong gen augmentations are said to include a bigger pod as well as a four-wheel model. Rumors suggest that GM is targeting urban centers in China, South Africa and The U.S. with an expected price tag of $10K. Apparently GM is bringing the unusual electric podcar into mass production based on substantial positive feedback from the public.

Nissan Leaf Gets Top Safety Rating

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recently gave the Nissan Leaf top marks for safety with a five-star rating. That makes the Leaf the first electric car to attain such a rank. The European New Car Assessment Program found the Nissan Leaf just as praiseworthy when it gave it a five star rating in June. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the Leaf top marks. Germany Investing Billions in Plug-in Electric Cars

In a major move to help support the proliferation of electric cars, the German government is prepared to spend “billions of euros” in an effort to get a million electric vehicles registered before 2021. Reuters is reporting that the Germans will be dumping massive amounts of money into spending on the electric cars, they are putting a lot of effort into increasing incentives to buy plug-in electric cars.

Chevy Volt Burns, Then Burns Again

A Chevy Volt owned by Dee and Storm Connors in Barkhamsted, CT was caught in a garage fire and ruined along with the home-converted electric Suzuki Samurai that was parked there. Now more recently, the same Chevy Volt, which has remained sitting in the remains of the burnt out garage, has apparently reignited somehow. The Chevy Volt was not plugged in when it caught fire for the second time and the local authorities are looking into the cause of the second fire.

Toyota Motor announced recent;y that they have sold their 1 millionth Prius in the United States. This is no surprise, as Toyota released September 2010 statistics revealing that it had sold over 2 million Priuses worldwide. Of those, 206,000 had been sold in Europe, 827,000 in Japan, and over 939,000 in the U.S., as well as thousands more in other countries. EU to Ban Gas-powered Cars by 2050?

It looks like the European Union intends to make a bold pledge to ban all diesel and gas-powered cars by the year 2050. This plan is expected to be part of the EU’s Roadmap on Transport which will also aim for a cut in gas-powered cars on the road by 50% by 2030. The ambitious departure from fossil fuel reliance is expected to be achieved primarily through a focus on hybrid vehicles leading up to 2030 and then a more firm transition into purely electric vehicles by 2050.

Federal authorities are considering removing any option of running in stealth mode in your electric and hybrid vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently setting a timetable on a bill passed by the Obama Administration that bans car manufacturers from producing vehicles with the option to shut off the noise makers installed in electric cars and hybrids.
