A benefit-cost analysis of a red drum stock enhancement program in South Carolina

Environmental Economics

Due to concerns about overharvesting within South Carolina coupled with regional management actions, South Carolina explored the technical feasibility of stocking hatchery-produced juvenile red drum as a technique to augment the abundance of South Carolina stock.   The paper is a benefit-cost analysis, actually used by the agency (see Stocking South Carolina's Favorite Saltwater Fish ). "UNC-Wilmington Orders Mandatory Evacuation as Storm Approaches"

Environmental Economics

I hope everyone in FL, GA, SC and NC remains safe: The University of North Carolina at Wilmington announced on Tuesday afternoon that all 15,000 of its students would be required to evacuate the coastal campus by midday on Thursday as Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in years, approaches from the south. At least eight deaths have been attributed to the storm in South America and the Caribbean, and the toll is expected to rise.

I asked him whether voters of the Red Lobster persuasion would be willing to pay the far higher price of home-caught shrimp. And when he waved the point away, I asked him about the trade implications, and what it would mean to the Vietnamese shrimp farmers.

Happy New Year John

Environmental Economics

The new year is already bringing changes to North Carolina drivers in the form of a record high tax on gasoline. The North Carolina House voted in November to cap the tax at 35 cents for six months, but the Senate declined to take up the bill, saying it wasn't the right time to consider the change. Gas stations in North Carolina along I-95 near the South Carolina and Virginia borders will see significant decreases in sales.

Your organic milk might contain algae and fish oil

Green (Living) Review

Whoriskey describes a setting in a South Carolina factory that sounds a tad less charming than Horizon’s cartoon cow leaping across the planet's grassy fields might suggest. He writes: Inside a South Carolina factory, in industrial vats that stand five stories high, batches of algae are carefully tended, kept warm and fed corn syrup. Millions and millions of gallons of organic milk contain industrial-brewed ingredients to beef up nutritional values.

Daily demand and supply

Environmental Economics

Weather related supply changes are not just for oranges: An unusually cold winter that decimated native shrimp has robbed the Carolinas of a spring delicacy. Below-normal water temperatures killed virtually all the white shrimp that overwinter in South Carolina's estuaries, and N.C. The cold heaped more trouble on Carolina shrimpers, whose numbers are also dwindling.

5 Colorful Cauliflower Varieties To Grow

Green (Living) Review

With a massive heatwave underway here in South Carolina, I can’t help but daydream about fall and its cool-weather crops. It’s the only way to stay sane in the 100-plus degrees with what seems like 100-percent humidity. This hopeful thinking has me considering which types of cauliflower to include in the garden this year. The following are a short list of several cultivars that can add some interest to this often-overlooked vegetable.

"North Carolina’s Misunderstood Cut in Jobless Benefits"

Environmental Economics

Justin Wolfers: Since North Carolina effectively eliminated unemployment benefits last year for people unemployed 20 weeks or more, the state has become a symbol in the partisan wars over economic policy. But digging into the data suggests North Carolina should really be a case study in people seeing what they want to see. North Carolina is more than a case study, too. My reading of the North Carolina experiment is that it provides little support for either side.

The Magic of Mullein

Green (Living) Review

We are so lucky to have Mullein growing wild here in South Carolina. It is so prolific and easy to find and grow. Internal contradiction

Environmental Economics

For instance, the American Public Power Association predicts that four proposed regulations from the EPA could result in the closure of enough power plants to power every single home in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.  Another one from an email I received from my Congresswoman today: Unfortunately many job-killing regulations stand in the way of more American-made energy.

A nutty demand and supply example

Environmental Economics

In South Carolina, some orchards succumbed completely. Groan, I know, but use this one if you are tired of those Florida freeze examples: A rare collision of ill-timed rain, marauding animals and a growing love affair between the Chinese middle class and the pecan has resulted in the worst pecan supply in recent memory. As a result, grocery store prices are up by about 30 percent. In 2012, the nation’s pecan orchards produced about 302 million pounds of pecans.

Environmental Economics

Environmentalists said opening the Atlantic waters would put the coasts of Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia at risk for an environmental disaster like the BP spill that struck the Gulf Coast in 2010, when millions of barrels of oil washed ashore after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig. The estimated effect in North Carolina is 55,000 jobs and $4 billion increase in state GDP by 2035. Why else would the government try to stop mining in Alaska?

Some empirical evidence on the benefits of catch shares in commercial fisheries
