Dawn in South Carolina

10,000 Birds

Near the turn of the 20th century, wealthy influencer Bernard Baruch bought coastal property in South Carolina. Originally from New Jersey, she has lived in South Carolina for over a decade, and was a great help identifying the shorebirds we found.

What is the State Bird of South Carolina?

10,000 Birds

This unique sound belongs to the Carolina Wren , who unsurprisingly is the state bird of South Carolina! Adopted as the state bird in 1948 , the Carolina Wren actually superseded another species: the Northern Mockingbird. Carolina Wrens are impressive little birds. Because they prefer to nest in cavities a few feet off the ground, Carolina Wrens will nest in special nest boxes if you are so inclined to have a breeding pair in your yard.

What is the State Bird of South Carolina?

10,000 Birds

After spending the weekend along the South Carolina coast, I can say with confidence that I saw dozens and dozens of South Carolina’s state bird: both the original and the current version. Though South Carolina first chose the Northern Mockingbird as its state bird, in 1948 the general assembly changed its mind. Less than ten years later the issue was taken up again, and this time the Carolina Wren given its rightful place as a state symbol.

Your organic milk might contain algae and fish oil

Green (Living) Review

Whoriskey describes a setting in a South Carolina factory that sounds a tad less charming than Horizon’s cartoon cow leaping across the planet's grassy fields might suggest. He writes: Inside a South Carolina factory, in industrial vats that stand five stories high, batches of algae are carefully tended, kept warm and fed corn syrup. Millions and millions of gallons of organic milk contain industrial-brewed ingredients to beef up nutritional values.

I asked him whether voters of the Red Lobster persuasion would be willing to pay the far higher price of home-caught shrimp. And when he waved the point away, I asked him about the trade implications, and what it would mean to the Vietnamese shrimp farmers.
