Lots More Electric Vehicles Coming Soon to Massachusetts

Sierra Club Compass

Though there are no leaves on the trees yet, my home state of Massachusetts became a greener place to live this week. Governor Deval Patrick announced Thursday a rebate program that will provide state residents who purchase or lease an electric vehicle (EV) a rebate of up to $2,500 - an incentive that we in the Massachusetts Electric Vehicles Taskforce enthusiastically recommended. Move over, landfills — food scraps give Massachusetts biogas

Green (Living) Review

The state of Massachusetts is cracking down on food waste in a big way. Come Oct 1, any institution producing more than a ton of leftovers a week — think grocery stores, hotels, universities, nursing homes, and the like — won’t be able to send their discarded food to the landfill anymore.

Why Is Massachusetts So Behind in EV adoption?

Sierra Club Compass

More than 80,000 American drivers have purchased plug-in electric vehicles in the last couple of years, but only 900 of them are in my home state of Massachusetts. This week's Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Roundtable event, organized by the MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Conservation Law Foundation, set out to change that. Some of the other speakers pointed to what other states had done (and Massachusetts had not yet done) to incentive EVs.

In Massachusetts, Being "Green" Is About More than Words

Sierra Club Compass

In a debate on Tuesday, Massachusetts’ Republican Senate candidate Gabrial Gomez claimed to be a “green Republican” who looks down on those in his own party who “deny science.” The facts about Keystone XL are simple: it would create no new Massachusetts jobs, it would threaten the water supply for millions of Americans, and it would dump more climate-disrupting carbon pollution into our atmosphere than if you put 37 million more cars on the road or built 51 new coal plants.

On Thursday, I joined Massachusetts energy and environmental agency leaders on a three-city tour promoting all of these topics. Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner David Cash congratulated Somerville and said that the Somerville project is being supported by MassEVIP providing $2.5 million in incentives to Massachusetts public and private entities, including municipalities, state fleets, and universities acquiring EVs and charging stations.

Homeowners in Massachusetts can sell back electricity

Green Life Smart Life

Homeowners in Mass are doing it. Selling back their electricity and at a decent rate! The only way homeowners can take advantage of this is by generating power on their own. They must do so by installing solar panels on their roofs or having wind turbines put on their property. Net metering is what it is called. If they generate more energy than they need on any given day or week property owners will need to submit an application so that they may begin to earn credits on their electricity bills.
