It roams only in the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam. During the conflict, Laos became the most bombed country per capita in human history; more bombs rained down on it than on all of Europe during World War II. Patrol team with wire snares collected in saola habitat, central Laos (Nakai-Nam Theun National Protected Area). There is still plenty of forest in Laos. The saola is the largest terrestrial mammal never seen alive in the wild by a biologist.

The Mekong fishery produces more than 2 million tons per year, nearly 20 percent of the global total for freshwater fish harvest, and provides the primary source of protein and livelihood for tens of millions of low income, rural people in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. China has built six large dams on the upper river, and two-main stem dams are now under construction in Laos in the Mekong’s productive heart — the so-called Lower Mekong Basin.

Community collects locally sourced materials to construct a school in Vietnam

The Xuan Hoa commune in the Lao Cai province of northwest Vietnam is, like much of the surrounding area, a region that has suffered from economic hardships in the past. A large number of households in Xuan Hoa live in extreme poverty, including many of the school district’s 78 students aged 6 to 11 years old. The new Dao school by 1+1>2 Architects was completed in 2019 to provide provide education to the area’s children in first through fifth grades.
