Feed people, not landfills

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that around 35 million tons of food waste was generated in 2010, of which 97% was thrown away in landfills or incinerators. That, however, does not fit into the schemes of industry and government.

Zero Waste – is it possible?

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Zero Waste is a concept that is very much like the idea of sustainable consumption in that it is not feasible regardless of what some people preach. But that is not a model that industry (and, it would appear, government) does not want.

Stop needlessly sending waste to landfill

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Hilary Benn, the former Environment Secretary, has, on March 18, 2010, set out plans to sort more waste, save resources and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Too many everyday waste materials such as metal cans, wood, paper, and food end up in landfill when there is a market for them and an environmental argument for re-using and recycling them. At Bywaters he set out the economic benefits of reducing waste to landfill.

Waste Incineration: Advantages and Disadvantages

Unfortunately—or perhaps ominously is the better word—about 60 percent of this garbage will end up in landfills, which are multiplying globally as a pace that nearly matches the reproduction rate of the rat populations that live in them [3]. Is incineration better than landfills? Wast

Europe heading for dismal fail on its zero waste policy on plastics

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The plastics industry is not going to achieve zero waste to landfill until 2037, which is a full 17 years later than its stated 2020 target. This is the the damning conclusion of new research from European trade association PlasticsEurope which has examined current progress to date on recycling and recovery of waste plastics across the EU. This can be done, by legislation if necessary, tomorrow and the zero to landfill would soon be achieved.

The real R's of waste management

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) We keep hearing the mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle” but they way most people seem to perceive it, due to government brainwashing, is as “recycle, recycle, recycle”. Reducing waste to start with and then reuse (and repurposing) never gets a looking in and a mention. But, the governments, central and local, cannot make any money from us reusing things now, can they. It saves you money and prevents things going for recycling or into the landfill.

Former landfill site has been designated contaminated land

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) A former landfill site that was used between the 1960s and 1990s has been designated contaminated land after gas was found to be leaking close to nearby homes creating a 'unacceptable risk' to residents. Gas is produced from the natural breakdown of the dumped rubbish in this case wood, paper and other wastes, which are creating methane and carbon dioxide.

Easy ways to cut down on trash and starve the landfill

Green (Living) Review

When you now consider and factor in commercial and manufacturing trash, and any other miscellaneous items of trash production, the average person contributes well over a ton of trash every year and most of this trash, if it is in “ordinary” bins, ends up in landfill sites and is not reclaimed and recycled in any way, shape or form, and most of this would not be necessary at all. Let's start with the first “R” of the three “Rs” of waste management, namely the reduce.

Green (Living) Review

After being stored for 18 days, human waste will then be returning to homes in the form of renewable gas. National Grid believes that at least 15% of all gas consumed could be made from sewage slurry, old sandwiches and other food thrown away by supermarkets, as well as organic waste created by businesses such as breweries. Landfill sites can also produce methane gas which is then typically used to generate electricity.
