Recycling Glass

Green Home Blog

Recycling Glass. What is Glass? Glass is made by heating silica – usually in the form of sand – with lime and soda. Glass has been around for thousands of years. Naturally occurring glass from lightning and volcanoes was used for tool making during the Stone Age, and manufactured glass first appeared in Egypt around 3000 BCE. Because of its density, glass makes up a high percentage of household waste by weight. Recycling Glass.

Glass jar reuse

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) OK, I know, I keep repeating myself harping on about the reuse, repurposing and upcycling of glass jars (packaging waste) but it would appear that there are many who still have not gotten the message and toss most of those jars into the recycling bin (if they can even be bothered to do that). From left to right: Back row: storage jar, water bottle, beer glass. I repurpose glass jars for drinking water, beer, spirits; all different sizes.

The myth of glass recycling

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The great majority of people, I am sure, firmly believe that the glass bottles and glass jars, of which they so diligently remove the labels and then put out for the kerbside recycling pick-up are going to make new glass bottles and -jars. As most glass jars have but a few different neck sizes – lid sizes – they could, like they were done during World War Two, also be going back for reuse.

Green (Living) Review

By Michael Smith (Veshengro) Time and again kerbside recycling vehicles, and those collecting glass from bottle banks, can be observed dumping mixed bottles and jars – white, brown, green, etc. How can this then be recycled into new glass? Such mixed glass cannot be recycled into new bottles and such like and thus, I would suggest, this glass is then just being ground up to be turned into aggregate or for products where the coloring does not matter.
