How to Bird by Car

10,000 Birds

When for whatever reason you may no longer be much of a walker, that shouldn’t be a reason not to be a birder. A car is the obvious solution. When it’s sunny, you have the shade you want; when it’s cold, you can turn on the heating; when it’s windy, you can close the windward window. And you can also use your car speakers to play that owl call. What sort of a car would be the best choice?

A: Because it's better than acting like an obnoxious teenager

Environmental Economics

When I mention what I do (come up with ways to estimate the value of environmental goods and services), I sometimes get a response like this :   It really is irritating that some people need to use economic measures to value our environment. The reality is our environment, air, water, seas, national parks & Great Barrier Reef are truly priceless & must be treated as such ie no cost benefit BS studies needed. My response is really quite simple.

The Sandhill Cranes vs. Canada Geese

10,000 Birds

The stage is set for two rival gangs to fight over coveted territory: a grassy lawn bordered by a dirt road and a smattering of trees, surrounded by grassland and marsh. At first glance, the Sandhill Cranes seem to be at an advantage. They’re taller, after all, with larger wingspans and sharper beaks. On the other hand, the Canada Geese have both safety in numbers and famously aggressive personalities.

Guest Post: What Air Pollution is Costing Us

Environmental Economics

Pollution and health have always been directly linked, both environmentally and medically, but few people consider the economic impact felt by countries afflicted with poor outdoor air quality. The World Health Organization estimates that the cost of disability and premature death from air pollution in Europe totalled close to $1.6 trillion USD in 2015. Each form of pollution presents its own unique challenges, while resulting in a hefty expense and posing a threat to human health.

There are two kinds of bird names in this world. There are names assigned by a single person at a single point in time, including all the binomial scientific nomenclature and most of the common names that involve the bird being named after someone’s friend, sponsor, or sister-in-law. And there are folk names, which often sound super-weird, disproportionately involve onomatopoeia, and invite embarrassing folk etymologies.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Recycling

Greentumble

Until relatively recently, recycling was not a major. part of most people’s lives. However, the last few years have seen it become an integral aspect of our everyday activities, with many of us sorting our waste into recyclables and non-recyclables without really thinking about it. Recycling is seen by citizens and public policy makers alike as a real solution to multiple environmental problems.

I know that some of you have faithfully following along on our adventure this year, and might have noticed that there was now “Week 27” I am afraid this week was dedicated to getting ready for the road trip that will carry us thru the bulk of the balance of 2018. Our 5th wheel needed some maintenance work, a couple of small repairs and a couple of major upgrades. This pretty much wiped out birding for the week. So, we move right on into Week 28, and we have hit the road.

Robin stake-out

10,000 Birds

The summer has been glorious in the UK this year. Sun, sun and more sun. How marvellous it was for a couple of weeks, but we are not used to stability in our weather and quickly get bored. It has been said that the greatest thing about the British weather is that if you don’t like it, all you have to do is wait a few minutes and it will change. But not this year. The long, hot, dry spell has meant that few of the weeds that normally vex my gardening aspirations have grown.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of September 2018?

10,000 Birds

Every weekend possesses its own charms, but the ones that extend into the regular work week inspire the most excitement. We Americans certainly love our Labor Day weekend, despite conflicting views about labor itself. Just remember that this weekend presents the last fashionable chance for your summer whites, although I don’t recommend that if you’re birding! My long weekend involves a lot of work, which ironically isn’t how we typically celebrate Labor Day in these parts.

"The Pattern is Clear": Economic research is being driven out of D.C.

Environmental Economics

Consider: Earlier this year , President Trump proposed significant cuts to the USDA's Economic Research Service--50% cuts in fact: Funding for ERS would be slashed by 50 percent, to $45 million, in part by eliminating "low-priority research" that the administration said was already being done by the private sector or nonprofits. The administration asks for the ERS to focus on core programs of data analysis and forecasts.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of August 2018)

The end of August, which often seems synonymous with the end of summer, evokes an entire spectrum of emotion, from sweet to bitter. Birders, however, approach that wistful moment with more excitement than, say, school children. The end of August signals the beginning of another great global migratory movement. I’d trade local sweet corn for that!

On previous visits we have encountered adult Black-necked Storks , but on this occasion there was only a juvenile Black-necked Stork.
