Just like Coase drew it up?

Environmental Economics

Brazen in its irony : As the nation plans new defenses against the more powerful storms and higher tides expected from climate change, one project stands out: an ambitious proposal to build a nearly 60-mile “spine” of concrete seawalls, earthen barriers, floating gates and steel levees on the Texas Gulf Coast.

DDT, oil spills, and a wall.

10,000 Birds

360 miles of National Park land at the border! My first ‘protest’ memory involved putting pencil to notebook paper and writing the President about the harmful effects of DDT. The Weekly Reader had shocked everyone in class with news of Bald Eagles dying – and humans were to blame! As a youngster who loved to read, I thought the best way to stop this assault was with words.

Poverty Mindset vs Voluntary Poverty

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) What was once called voluntary poverty is now referred to as voluntary simplicity because some people seem to have had problem with the word poverty. When you decide to go that route on your own accord, to live a simpler, more or less, poverty lifestyle, it is a different kettle of fish to having it forced upon you by circumstances, some beyond your control.

Where Are You Birding This Fourth Weekend of August 2018?

10,000 Birds

August draws to a close, which means that a new migratory season has begun. We may be chasing migrants well into October, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start the process now. Happy hunting! I’ll be out and about enjoying a glorious stretch of summer weather, though I don’t know where I’ll be looking for birds. Corey may still be recovering from a California birding blitz, but he’ll probably hit the coast in Queens or the surrounding area. How about you?

A Climate Change Crash

10,000 Birds

We expect climate change to have a mostly negative effect on natural habitats, at least short and medium term. Yes, there has “always” been climate change. Stable and healthy modern ecosystems known to have existed in recent decades (there may be none extant at this very moment) arrived at that state after a long history involving change. But we also know that rapid change can have long term devastating effects.

Birds that Costa Rican Birders Want to See the Most

10,000 Birds

No matter where or when we bird, we have our targets. Our bogey or nemesis species, birds that we would opt to see over others. Back in the early days of birding with optics, I wonder if such wanted species would have been birds that were much more common in present times. Perhaps elegant waders pushed to the edge of local extinction like Great and Snowy Egrets , or the Roseate Spoonbill ?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of August 2018)

Even notice that hot weekends don’t usually make for hot birding? Interesting, no? Though I succeeded in resisting the siren song of shorebirds at the lakeshore, I couldn’t help but pay attention to birds everywhere else I went. Most engaging was an active pair of Northern Mockingbirds frolicking (kind of like this Victory Dance ) behind the big test at the Rochester Ukrainian Festival.

Air Pollution Causes and Effects

Greentumble

Although the sky appears limitless on a clear day, our atmosphere is actually a thin envelope surrounding the earth. Just 8 kilometers above the surface, we would suffocate, much like a fish out of water. But even with this knowledge, air pollution is not a new thing to us. We first started pumping pollutants into the atmosphere back when we were still living in caves, with smoke from cooking fires unable to escape due to a lack of ventilation.

Environmental Economics

I'm teaching benefit-cost analysis this semester. The course is for upper level economics majors (ECO 4660) and non-economics graduate students (ECO 5660).    I have 6 books on my shelf but none of them are satisfactory for a variety of reasons (mostly, the theory is too deep and the estimating benefits chapters are dated). So, I'm using the EPA's  Guidelines for Preparing Economic Analyses  supplemented with the Haab and Whitehead Encyclopedia.

What’s been helpful in cultivating a peaceful heart is realizing how I don’t know anything. It’s actually really cathartic to recognize how dumb we are.
