"Economic Ideas You Should Forget"

Environmental Economics

This is a from a chapter in a book edited by Bruno Frey and David Iselin titled Economic Ideas You Should Forget :  Contingent Valuation, Willingness to Pay, and Willingness to Accept. WTP roughly consists of asking consumers (or producers) how much they are willing to pay to avoid a negative or to accept a positive outcome; WTA goes for compensation and asks how much an agent would like to be paid to accept a negative outcome or to forego a positive one.

Like Pruitt’s war on science, which culminated in a plan to ignore an entire category of scientific studies when measuring environmental risks, his war on economics could erode regulatory protections. As a former EPA official, I know the critical roles that science and economics play in shaping the agency’s decisions. Even the Trump White House recently  concluded  that the economic benefits of all major regulations were several times higher than the total costs.

Why upcycling must become an economic sector

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Upcycling is, in general, the process where (at least) some of the shape and properties of the original waste product are retained – though not always, and we will come to that later – and where another useful product is produced from it.

An economic conundrum

Environmental Economics

So I read page 2 (and no more) of the NYTimes story John pointed to this morning (John read page 1) and it raises an interesting economic puzzle for environmental advocates: Simple economics suggests that if the nation is producing more energy, prices should be falling. So the question becomes, what is the value of environmental preservation relative to economic growth.

Fake economic growth

Green (Living) Review

In the economic statistics, however, those cars show up as sales of new vehicles and thus create a fake economic growth and also a fake GDP for the countries where those cars have been made and registered. As it also does not make economic sense this is just weirder than weird.

The National Association for Business Economics is having their policy conference in DC this week. About 38% of respondents think the tax burden will be shared by both oil producers and consumers. Just 4% believe the tax burden will fall primarily on oil producers. Forty-four percent of panelists think that the proposal will “hamper economic growth” through reduced consumer spending, and 40% believe that the tax will “benefit domestic oil producers over offshore producers.”

It has taken favorable state policies and technological and economic advances to spur the current level of activity, as well as interest among developers and investors, including foreign oil and gas companies that see offshore wind as an important part of their corporate strategies. The obsession with economic growth

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Governments all over the world, bar in the tiny Himalayan state of Bhutan, are obsessed, literally, with economic growth but not in order that people can have a better life and way of life but because it determines the general domestic product (GDP) of a country and with it and through it a nation''s credit status and credit worthiness. This obsession with growth goes even so far as to creating a fake growth in that industry keeps producing.

Economic transition is a difficult, but necessary conversation--especially for those affected

Environmental Economics

As countries develop, economically and socially, the means of producing economic well-being shift.    These shifts are often uncomfortable for those working tin the affected industries.    In the U.S. in the early 20th century, technology-induced on-farm productivity gains led to significant decreases in on-farm employment and significant increases in industrial manufacturing jobs.

Environmental Economics

Yoram Bauman: The National Association of Manufacturers just released a scathing report on carbon taxes (the full report was produced—unfortunately—with the assistance of my friends at NERA ), but in reality all their analysis shows is that paying down the Federal debt is the poison pill of economic policy: as long as the economy is struggling to recover, connecting debt payments to any policy will make that policy look terrible.
