Who's Killing Renewable Energy?

Green (Living) Review

A promising offshore wind energy project has languished on the East Coast for 15 years—and its enemies range from a Koch brother to the Kennedys. In 2001, Jim Gordon, a Boston-based energy entrepreneur who played a critical role in the development of natural gas–fired power plants in the 1990s, was searching for a way to produce energy on the East Coast. He began working on what would become the Cape Wind Energy Project in Nantucket Sound, off the Massachusetts shore.

Radar breakthrough for offshore wind

Green (Living) Review

This new system will enable the MoD to lift its current objections to five offshore wind farms which represent £7bn of investment and stand to deliver more than 3,000MW of wind energy, enough capacity to power 1.7 The full costs for the acquisition of the radar system have not been disclosed, though these have been jointly met by Government and wind energy companies seeking to construct the offshore wind farms in the Greater Wash.

UK lead in offshore wind confirmed

Green (Living) Review

· European Wind Energy Association 2010 stats just released, confirm UK position · Total EU offshore now close to 3 gigawatts, powering 2.9 million EU homes · 19 gigawatts consented in EU waters, sufficient to power 14 European capital cities Latest offshore wind statistics, released today by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), confirm that the United Kingdom is the European and world sector leader with 1,341 megawatts (MW) installed.

And this is a good thing considering that they will be hit with the energy of around 200 tons of air per second out in the sea where these wind turbines are designed to be used. And because offshore wind projects are quite expensive it makes sense to build a fewer big wind turbines than lots of small ones. A prototype 6-megawatt turbine will be erected at the Østerild test station in Denmark later this fall.

Record year for European offshore wind, UK leads the sector

Green (Living) Review

UK has half of newly installed European offshore wind farms in first half of 2010 European total approaches 2.5 gigawatts, a threefold increase since 2006 by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Renewable UK, the trade association for wind and marine energy - Britain’s fastest growing green energy sectors – welcomed today’s announcement from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) that European offshore wind capacity in 2010 has grown faster than in the same period in 2009.

Germany Opens First Offshore Wind Farm

Eco Friendly Daily

Germany is Europe’s largest economy and has a growing renewable energy sector. However, the nation had yet to open an offshore wind farm despite other nations in Europe having done the same. Both Great Britain and Denmark are well grounded in the offshore wind farm sector, each of them having hundreds of megawatts of energy coming from turbines at sea. The Alpha Ventus is further from shore than any other current offshore wind farm that is in Europe.

London Array: Masdar Celebrates World’s Largest Wind Farm Inauguration

The London Array is Masdar’s largest renewable energy project to date, but the government-supported research and development group have no intention of stopping there. With a 20 percent stake in the offshore wind project that will generate enough energy to power half a million UK homes, the group is ready to keep up the momentum. and Dong from Denmark when Shell pulled out. Multi-Country Agreement On Massive Offshore Wind Farm In North Sea

Eco Friendly Daily

Europe has been in talks for years regarding sending renewable energy across Europe from places like North Africa. A recent agreement between ten European Union members strives to be the beginning of such energy integration. Ten countries which border the North Sea in Europe have agreed to an electricity grid which would send energy from North Sea wind projects to all of the countries. The offshore wind farm planned for the North Sea is massive at 140 gig watts.

Europe Maintains Commitment to Ambition and Action at Recent Marrakesh Climate Talks

” [5] During the first week of the negotiations, the UK ratified the Paris Agreement (the EU having already done so—and in record time), taking the opportunity to highlight its proposal to phase out the use of coal in energy generation by 2025 [6] —where it has also been joined by Finland who plan to achieve the same by 2030. In part, this is being driven by the cost reductions seen and expected for many renewable technologies.

After record levels last year, world wind power is set to break new records in 2013

China installed some 13,000 megawatts of wind in 2012, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). In a country more readily associated with coal-fired electricity and nuclear power ambitions, wind reached some impressive milestones in China’s energy mix in 2012. The European Union (EU) added more megawatts of wind in 2012 than it did natural gas, coal, or nuclear, even as fiscal austerity measures cut renewable energy incentives.

China helped wind power climb to new record levels in 2011

Green Blog

Wind energy developers installed a record 41,000 megawatts of electricity-generating capacity in 2011, bringing the world total to 238,000 megawatts. Many long-distance high-voltage transmission projects are under development across the United States to help address this, including four projects proposed by Clean Line Energy Partners in the Midwest, South, and West that would transport more than 17,000 megawatts of renewably generated electricity.

Malta to Get State-of-the-Art Floating Wind Farm from Hexicon

Green Prophet

Despite the fact that the EU is willing to fund renewable energy in its climate laggard states, using cap & trade revenues from the sale of emission allowances, Malta still gets only 1% of its electricity from renewable energy. As an EU member Malta is required to produce at least 10% of its energy from renewables by 2020. If approved the project would represent full circle in the government’s policy with regard to wind energy.

Britain must do more to secure wind energy jobs

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Britain, as a nation, is punching well below its weight when it comes to offshore wind, risking missing legally-binding targets and the opportunity to secure tens of thousands of jobs. The paper says rapid expansion of the sector is needed to meet EC targets of 15% Britain's energy to come from renewable energy by 2020. Wind can provide clean, sustainable energy, while attracting investment and creating employment.

Samsø’s Success

Eco Friendly Daily

The inhabitants of Samsø are now self-sufficient using only renewable energy. An additional goal is to use renewable sources for 20% of the total demand. Some turbines are privately owned – mainly by locals – while several others are run by energy cooperatives. On Samsø, energy generation has been on the increase. And after another two years, renewable energy was produced in greater quantities that it was used.

Our largely meat based diet is the source of considerable environmental damage, from the increased global warming that it produces (a combination of embodied energy in feeding animals plus the CO2 and methane they produce, a cow for example produces about 90 kg’s of methane per year) and the vast “dead zones” in oceans caused by agricultural run off. Of course for me, an expert in energy, the real worry here is the energy one. Food contains rather a lot of embodied energy.
