Climate Change

Last week ( or at least that's when it was covered in the popular press ), climate scientist Ed Hawkins put out a simple illustration of changes in global temperatures since 1850.    I used Dr. Hawkins image and had a little fun:

A Climate Change Crash

We expect climate change to have a mostly negative effect on natural habitats, at least short and medium term. Yes, there has “always” been climate change. Stable and healthy modern ecosystems known to have existed in recent decades (there may be none extant at this very moment) arrived at that state after a long history involving change. But we also know that rapid change can have long term devastating effects.

Climate Change and Birds

10,000 Birds

I write a lot about climate change on my other blog , and so I don’t really feel a strong need to touch on this topic very often here. But when you think about it, climate change might be more important to the people who read 10,000 Birds than a lot of other groups of people. People like to deny the reality of climate change, but it is real, and sea level rise is part of that. Climate change is the biggest threat to migratory birds this century.

When climate changes, causing habitats to move, birds can get up and fly away to a new habitat, so really, they’ll be fine. I’ve been working on climate change lately (not causing it, but reading and writing about it) and birds have come up in a few places. I’d like to take a moment to touch on a few disparate aspects of the relationship between climate change and birds. because the Holocene had little rapid climate change.

When it comes to climate change, the experts recommend spending a small amount – roughly $1 billion – to investigate the feasibility of cooling the planet through geo-engineering options. Moreover, the research could potentially give us low-cost, effective insurance against global warming. Since the benefits of climate policy may happen 50+ years down the road, these benefits are discounted away. That is, climate policy is not about spending money.

On my reading list: "The Economic Impacts of Climate Change"

Environmental Economics

Abstract:  This article reviews the economic impacts of climate change and the policy implications of the results. Current estimates indicate that climate change will likely have a limited impact on the economy and human welfare in the twenty-first century. In fact, the initial impacts of climate change may well be positive. Poverty reduction complements greenhouse gas emissions reduction as a means to reduce climate change impacts.

Climate Change And Birds: Europe vs. North America

10,000 Birds

I want to alert you to a recent study (from April) that looks at the plight of bird populations under conditions of climate change in Europe and North America. From the Abstract and summary: Changes in climate can cause populations of species to decline, to increase, or to remain steady. Despite many differences between the two regions, expectations about how a species might respond to climate change did predict actual responses.

We often consider climate change in terms of. how it will directly affect the human population – for example, greater extremes of temperature, more frequent droughts and flooding, and sea level rise impacting on our cities, homes and the global economy.
