Two years ago, the president wouldn’t mention climate change. Last night, he spoke honestly about the issue to 40 million people and vowed that if “Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will.”

This has been quite the year though – what with historic election of our first black President , dominating swimming in the Olympics , finally putting OJ Simpson in jail and watching the financial markets crash. A decade later, President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the White House and encouraged all Americans to put on a sweater, turn down the thermostat and conserve. Happy Birthday, America.
