But I hope you will enjoy it, nonetheless. Walking through an airport last week I saw something that really got my attention. There were several tanks full of small fish. At one tank, a girl sat with her feet in the water, fish swimming around in the water and clustered around her feet. She looked quite relaxed, even slightly bemused. There was a sales person at a booth handing out literature. I had to stop and find out more. The lady behind the sales podium gave me the pitch. The short version is that these were garra rufa fish, a special fish imported from Asia that would nibble away the dry skin and leave my feet feeling softer and healthier. All I needed was a 15 minute treatment, and my feet would be revitalized. The claims went on about special enzymes in the fish saliva and how the treatment would also relax me and promote a good night’s sleep. You get the idea. I asked the lady if she were joking, but she insisted that she was absolutely serious about this. She had to be, because 15 minutes with the garra rufa fish was going to set me back about $20. This airport outlet went by the name “Silky Soles” and I expect there are other competing businesses with similar names. In fact, when I returned home and did a little research, I found out that garra rufa fish have been used for years in spas, especially in Turkey, to treat all kinds of skin ailments. Garra rufa fish live and breed in warm water such as that found in pools above hot springs. They are native to Turkey. However, Turkey has now stopped exporting the fish so now most of them in western countries come from the Orient. The use of these fish has created a business in spas specializing in treating skin problems. I was surprised to find out that there is even a fish pedicure service in the towns of Alexandria and Woodbridge Virginia in the good ole USA. I have to be honest: to me garra rufa fish treatments are only a short distance removed from using leeches. And I expect the medical claims are exaggerated. But I must admit, this is a truly different idea for a novel experience.
