What Is Carbon Capture And Storage?

Green Living Tips

Carbon Capture and Storage/Sequestration (CCS) is one of a suite of so-called "clean coal" technologies touted to allow us to continue burning coal for electricity generation but with drastically reduced emissions

Carbon capture and storage

Green (Living) Review

by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Nature’s answer to carbon sequestration and storage Mechanical carbon capture and especially the storage of carbon in rocks, which has become a byword of government policy, could become a recipe for disaster. Carbon dioxide in overdose is a poison for every living thing, almost. Nature, believe it or not, has provided the perfect means of carbon capture and storage facilities; they are called trees.

Quick Take: How we can afford carbon capture right now

Conservancy Talk

I recently came across a thought-provoking piece by Thor Benson on The Verge , in which he argues that carbon removal strategies may be too expensive to be effective. During my years working on low-carbon innovation in the energy sector, I was struck by the time, effort and many millions of dollars the industry was investing to explore how to engineer a way to capture and store carbon dioxide below the earth’s surface.

How Will Saudi-Driven Carbon Capture Work Under the Durban Climate Agreement?

Green Prophet

The Saudis got the CDM funding for carbon capture they have long demanded: how will it work? Carbon capture may have been a big part of that, because the BASIC countries and the US are the world’s biggest coal producers.

Daily demand and supply: Why carbon capture was, but is not currently, viable

Environmental Economics

A day after American Electric Power said it would halt a project to bury carbon dioxide deep beneath a coal-fired power plant in West Virginia, experts say the decision reflects a seismic change in the economics of generating electricity. Since AEP announced its $668 million "carbon-capture" plan in 2009, estimates of the cost of the technology have grown.

Investing in carbon capture and storage Nature's way

Stopping deforestation, greening agriculture better than carbon capture and storage, says UNEP Report by Michael Smith (Veshengro) It does, does it? Should it not have been obvious, without the need of spending millions on (fake) research, that reafforestation of areas and looking after our forests and woodlands on a worldwide basis, and this includes their proper management, is better than any other means of “carbon capture” and “-storage”?

Encouraging planting trees will sequester carbon and conserve habitat

Green (Living) Review

Rewarding landowners for converting farmland into forest will be key to sequestering carbon and providing wildlife habitat, according to a new study by Oregon State University and collaborators. Paying landowners $100 an acre per year to convert land into forest would increase forestland by an estimated 14 percent and carbon storage by 8 percent by mid-century, the researchers say. Yet carbon storage and food production would shrink slightly, according to the study.

Canada has hinted at developing carbon capture and storage ( CCS ) technology to make the oil sands development cleaner. President Obama has hinted at a green energy policy that would limit "dirty" sources of fuel, like the oil sands. During yesterday's meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister the issue was discussed but no details were given. Sounds great except for two things.

But I hope you will enjoy it, nonetheless. Walking through an airport last week I saw something that really got my attention. There were several tanks full of small fish. At one tank, a girl sat with her feet in the water, fish swimming around in the water and clustered around her feet. She looked quite relaxed, even slightly bemused. There was a sales person at a booth handing out literature. I had to stop and find out more. The lady behind the sales podium gave me the pitch. The short version is that these were garra rufa fish, a special fish imported from Asia that would nibble away the dry skin and leave my feet feeling softer and healthier. All I needed was a 15 minute treatment, and my feet would be revitalized. The claims went on about special enzymes in the fish saliva and how the treatment would also relax me and promote a good night’s sleep. You get the idea. I asked the lady if she were joking, but she insisted that she was absolutely serious about this. She had to be, because 15 minutes with the garra rufa fish was going to set me back about $20. This airport outlet went by the name “Silky Soles” and I expect there are other competing businesses with similar names. In fact, when I returned home and did a little research, I found out that garra rufa fish have been used for years in spas, especially in Turkey, to treat all kinds of skin ailments. Garra rufa fish live and breed in warm water such as that found in pools above hot springs. They are native to Turkey. However, Turkey has now stopped exporting the fish so now most of them in western countries come from the Orient. The use of these fish has created a business in spas specializing in treating skin problems. I was surprised to find out that there is even a fish pedicure service in the towns of Alexandria and Woodbridge Virginia in the good ole USA. I have to be honest: to me garra rufa fish treatments are only a short distance removed from using leeches. And I expect the medical claims are exaggerated. But I must admit, this is a truly different idea for a novel experience.
