Eco Chick Escapes to: Barbados’ SeaU Guesthouse

Eco Chic

The SeaU Guesthouse in Bathsheba, Barbados fulfills all those authentic getaway desires. I was in Barbados to really relax; though I travel often, it is usually not ‘time off’ but doing-seeing as much as possible so that I can write about it for magazines and websites. The east coast of Barbados is tropical relaxing at its best; not overdeveloped, not touristy, and definitely off-the-beaten-path, which makes it ideal for a real getaway (more on Barbados here).

Corey is loving the sun and sand and rum and birds in Barbados. But his best of the weekend was easily a bird that he was amazed he could see in Barbados, the long-staying Eurasian Spoonbill that he spotted in its usual hangout, a private impoundment on Congo Road.

There is only one endemic species in Barbados, the Barbados Bullfinch , and they are unmissable.

Green (Living) Review

As reported by the Texas Tribune, a 4.4-megawatt South Texas solar farm operated by OCI Solar Power is now the grazing grounds of about 90 hardworking Barbados Cross sheep (appearance-wise, these hair goats aren’t your stereotypical fluffy white bleat machines). At a small San Antonio solar facility, the ovine groundskeeping crew keep things trim and tidy with the aid of split upper lips and 4-chambered stomachs.

Is Honey More Healthy Than Sugar?

Eco Chic

Non-raw honey (most of what you find on supermarket shelves) is just heated up to prevent crystallization, which can kill those good enzymes, but that’s still not very processed, compared to what happens with sugar, which goes through many, many stages on the journey from pretty green sugarcane growing in, say, Barbados, to the sugar you sprinkle in your tea.

This Week In Fuel

Eco Friendly Daily

The New York Times featured an article on Sunday about a promising new biodiesel source called Jatropha curcas or Barbados Nut – a weed that is currently used to shield food crops from animals in Northern Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. The plant seems ideal for both farmers and the environment: it is accustomed to dry conditions and is poisonous to pests, thus eliminating the need for complicated irrigation or dangerous, expensive pesticide use.

Tiny Snakes

Eco Friendly Daily

An entire species of small snakes exists, with the tiniest one being recently found in Barbados. I had no idea snakes came in any form other than the typical sizes of big and bigger. That is, until I heard of snakes that are mere centimeters long. These tiny creatures are known under the family category of Leptotyphlopidae. They are commonly known, if you know about them at all, as thread snakes or slender blind snakes. They are 30 centimeters or less in length.

Analysis by country of fossil fuel burning-based Carbon Debt and Carbon Credit

Green Blog

Fossil fuel burning yielding the greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major component of man-made global warming. In relation to carbon pollution from the burning of fossil fuels, Net Carbon Debt is equal to the Historical Carbon Debt (from fossil fuel burning since the start of the Industrial Revolution in circa 1750) minus the Carbon Credit (the residual carbon pollution from fossil fuel burning permitted between now and zero emissions in 2050).
