Eco Chick Escapes to: Barbados’ SeaU Guesthouse

Eco Chic

The SeaU Guesthouse in Bathsheba, Barbados fulfills all those authentic getaway desires. I was in Barbados to really relax; though I travel often, it is usually not ‘time off’ but doing-seeing as much as possible so that I can write about it for magazines and websites. The east coast of Barbados is tropical relaxing at its best; not overdeveloped, not touristy, and definitely off-the-beaten-path, which makes it ideal for a real getaway (more on Barbados here).

Oh, the joys of slipping through the pages of a new book that has just arrived, the Birds of the West Indies by Kirwan, Levesque, Oberle and Sharpe. I am checking the References and one name, expectedly, stands out: Bond, J. Is it even possible to bird the Caribbean without the feeling that James Bond birds over your shoulder, telling you: That may be an incorrect ID, recheck that one?

Corruption on the increase in Britain?

Green (Living) Review

Both Barbados and Qatar, on the other hand, have overtaken the UK, ranking 17 and 19 respectively. and is, along with the UK, far below the standard Transparency International labels "very clean" In comparison, Qatar and Barbados have undoubtedly cleaned up their acts. We seem to be learning from the Afghans for sure and not just in the field of corruption and the taking of bribes.

Is Honey More Healthy Than Sugar?

Eco Chic

Non-raw honey (most of what you find on supermarket shelves) is just heated up to prevent crystallization, which can kill those good enzymes, but that’s still not very processed, compared to what happens with sugar, which goes through many, many stages on the journey from pretty green sugarcane growing in, say, Barbados, to the sugar you sprinkle in your tea.

Shorebirds Are Still Being Hunted, Often Legally

Nature Conservancy - Science

In 2011, after they were grounded by a tropical storm, 2,000 American Golden Plover were shot by sport hunters in Barbados. In 2011, two whimbrels that were part of a migration tracking study were shot as they made landfall on the island of Guadeloupe during their south-bound migration. This Week In Fuel

Eco Friendly Daily

The New York Times featured an article on Sunday about a promising new biodiesel source called Jatropha curcas or Barbados Nut – a weed that is currently used to shield food crops from animals in Northern Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. The plant seems ideal for both farmers and the environment: it is accustomed to dry conditions and is poisonous to pests, thus eliminating the need for complicated irrigation or dangerous, expensive pesticide use.

Tiny Snakes

Eco Friendly Daily

An entire species of small snakes exists, with the tiniest one being recently found in Barbados. I had no idea snakes came in any form other than the typical sizes of big and bigger. That is, until I heard of snakes that are mere centimeters long. These tiny creatures are known under the family category of Leptotyphlopidae. They are commonly known, if you know about them at all, as thread snakes or slender blind snakes. They are 30 centimeters or less in length.

Prior to the opening of the climate summit in Durban, South Africa, many nations were already arguing over the timing and details of a legal agreement. So it comes as no surprise that the gap between nations has not lessened within the last four days of the summit.

At the 2011 Durban Climate Conference the US, with the help of its climate criminal lackeys Australia and Canada, again succeeded in preventing requisite international climate change action. Analysis by country of fossil fuel burning-based Carbon Debt and Carbon Credit

Green Blog

Fossil fuel burning yielding the greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major component of man-made global warming. In relation to carbon pollution from the burning of fossil fuels, Net Carbon Debt is equal to the Historical Carbon Debt (from fossil fuel burning since the start of the Industrial Revolution in circa 1750) minus the Carbon Credit (the residual carbon pollution from fossil fuel burning permitted between now and zero emissions in 2050).
