Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. During the course of our time at Summer Lake, we saw a couple of dozen Sora’s. In the last few years, there have been more and more White-faced Ibis now calling Summer Lake home.

The Lake of Beasts: Kerkini, Greece

The Kerkini Lake. Too short-tailed to be a kestrel, it’s a Merlin and the species #400 in barely more than an hour on my first morning at the Kerkini lake! Lake Kerkini National Park lies at 35 m / 115 ft a.s.l. With only a few more days left, 2017 was coming to a close.

Birding Lake Yojoa and Panacam Lodge

Week 24: Nisqually NWR, Bradley Lake, and a Twitch

My wife and I needed to go back into the town of Puyallup, where her father lives, so I excused myself, and spent some time at nearby Bradley Lake. The area is a fair sized city park, with a large fishing lake in the middle of it.

Week 31: Visits to Hart Mountain, Malheur and the surrounding areas.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake.

In Costa Rica, Fall is our Spring

But there’s still birds, others from colder habitats further north, thousands of goldeneyes, scoters and other ducks flying fast, back to the Great Lakes, sparrows flocking in the brush, a fantastic snowstorm of gulls decorating the Niagara River corridor.

At Stewart Lake NWR, we heard the sparrow, we could have sworn there was one at our feet, but it was windy and sound travels and sparrows apparently don’t perch on a slice of tall grass (not a post in sight) when the wind blows.

Little Big Year – Week 35: Route 66, Tucumcari and The Albuquerque area

Old cars, antique gas pumps, and neon lit motels, were just up Jeanne’s photographic alley, and Lake Tucumcari was sure to be a birding hot spot for me. As I mentioned before, Lake Tucumcari is now a large dry lake bed, mostly filled in with one weed or another.
