Having finally landed in one piece (mostly) on the East Coast after a whirlwind week of traveling to Opportunity Green in Los Angeles and GreenBuild 2009 in Phoenix, I am just now gathering my thoughts and notes from the shows. I have to say, GreenBuild proved not only to be the best green event I’ve been to all year, but the best overall trade show I attended in 2009. Gore pointed out that right now, in 2009, we have all the tools we need to solve the climate crisis.

April 14, 2009; Boulder, Colorado : According to the Earth Day Network’s web site, it took us (collectively as a human race) about 125 years to use our first trillion barrels of oil. We’re going to use up the next trillion barrels in only 30 years. It stands to reason our increased oil usage has an impact on our environment, our health and our lives. So this year as we celebrate Earth Day let’s remember there are simple yet effective steps we can take to help preserve our world.

I’ve always been a firm believer in the idea that buying stuff doesn’t have to be bad. Should we buy less? Should we carefully consider what we buy, where it comes from, and who makes it? Definitely, for sure, and yeah! BUT the thing that’s missing in all the anti-consumer screeds (and I’ve written a few) is the fact that many people on this planet make a living by selling something to someone else. It’s how they feed their families and pay their bills.
