No Recycling Bins No Trash Collection

Green Life Smart Life

I received a letter last summer when I was living in East Providence and at the top it read No Recycling Bins / No Trash Collection! I have to admit I was shocked but yet really excited that they would make such a bold statement. I was one of the very few houses on my busy multifamily street that actually put out the recycling every single week. The first week came and went with piles of trash lingering on the sidewalks for days and some till the next trash day. The town really did it.

Clear2Go Water Bottles

Green Life Smart Life

We all know that plastic water bottles are detrimental to our environment. We’ve all seen the Brita commercials (&# 30 minutes in a meeting, forever in a landfill&# ). Over the past few years, we have seen a major move towards reusable water bottles among eco-conscious water lovers. If you are like me and live in an area where the tap water isn’t hazardous but comes equipped with an awful taste, a water filtration system is a must. In my household, we use Brita.

Bottled water is becoming obsolete

Green Life Smart Life

Bottled water is getting banned. San Francisco’s mayor, Gavin Newsom has stopped the city government from using money to supply municipal workers with bottled water. New York City launched a champagne ad to encourage residents and tourists to stop using bottled water and drink the tap water. New York has been considered one of the best water in the country. Boston and San Francisco have also taken bottled water off many of their menus and replaced it with filtered tap water instead.

The Ten Benefits of Lighting Control

Green Life Smart Life

It’s Cheaper to Build a Dimmer than a Power Plant. The baseline benefit of incorporating lighting control in a built environment stems from the disparity in efficiency between the conservation and creation of energy. Intuitively, it makes sense that it would take less energy to conserve one watt of energy than to generate one watt of energy. Fortunately, we don’t have to rely on intuition.

VT Rep. Potter supports renewable energy on principle just not if it means windmills in his town

Green Life Smart Life

I am tired of the hypocrisy. This “I am for energy conservation and renewables&# but not in my backyard mentality must stop. I read this article yesterday and think that Vermont House of Representatives Democrat David Potter should be ashamed of himself as he was quoted saying: . This weekend I am moving into my new apartment, it is going to be wonderful and I am very excited but there is only one small problem! There is only one small closet. I am not quite sure you can call it a walk in (like they said in the ad) since it is built into the hallway stairs so for the first 2/3 of the closet you have to hunch over. This might not be an issue for some readers who have a moderate wardrobe but I have lots of shoes, dresses, coats, purses….you you get the picture, right?

Paper or Plastic? Plastic, please!

Green Life Smart Life

The impossible question, paper or plastic? For once I think there is a possibility that saying plastic isn’t such a bad idea. We all know now that we have the option to recycle our used plastic bags. Supermarkets are making it very easy by placing bins near doors allowing you to dispose of the bags you have been saving in your basement stairwell for months. Although this is a great idea but can seem like an overwhelming and time consuming task, we all should be doing it.
