Healthy Furniture is the Future in a Green Home

The new rage in interior design is eco friendly and healthy fabrics, surfaces, textures and finishes. People are finding the importance to using local woods and organic material, they are making a change to their carbon footprint, and making changes in order to “green” their lives.

Clear2Go Water Bottles

Green Life Smart Life

We all know that plastic water bottles are detrimental to our environment. We’ve all seen the Brita commercials (&# 30 minutes in a meeting, forever in a landfill&# ). Over the past few years, we have seen a major move towards reusable water bottles among eco-conscious water lovers. If you are like me and live in an area where the tap water isn’t hazardous but comes equipped with an awful taste, a water filtration system is a must. In my household, we use Brita.

No Recycling Bins No Trash Collection

Green Life Smart Life

I received a letter last summer when I was living in East Providence and at the top it read No Recycling Bins / No Trash Collection! I have to admit I was shocked but yet really excited that they would make such a bold statement. I was one of the very few houses on my busy multifamily street that actually put out the recycling every single week. The first week came and went with piles of trash lingering on the sidewalks for days and some till the next trash day. The town really did it.

The Ten Benefits of Lighting Control

Green Life Smart Life

It’s Cheaper to Build a Dimmer than a Power Plant. The baseline benefit of incorporating lighting control in a built environment stems from the disparity in efficiency between the conservation and creation of energy. Intuitively, it makes sense that it would take less energy to conserve one watt of energy than to generate one watt of energy. Fortunately, we don’t have to rely on intuition.

Going Green with Vinyl

This isn’t one of those lame, lazy “vinyl LPs are making a comeback” posts. There’s no news in that. But what about all of that unloved vinyl out there?

Don’t Waste Your Waste; Compost and Let Your Garden Grow

Green Life Smart Life

My 4 year-old son and I were eating bananas on our patio last week when he carelessly threw the peel into our small flower bed/vegetable garden. Rather than scold the young whipper-snapper for sullying our tablecloth-sized, weed-laden attempt at sustainable living, I used the opportunity to teach a lesson about giving our “waste” a second life. I turned to the youngster and half-jokingly asked, “What’re you starting a compost heap or something?”.

Eco-Friendly Siding

Green Life Smart Life

The siding on the home is in the process of going up - and it looks beautiful! As with most of the other products we were using, finding siding that was both green and could handle the harsh New England weather was our biggest priority. We decided on FSC-Certified White Cedar Shingles, from Liberty Cedar. Cedar shingles are known for their innate resistance to moisture and insects, and because the cedar is responsibly harvested we know we are not depleting our forest’s population.

The NFL Goes Green… Slowly

With the football season upon us, I decided to check out the green programs of the NFL’s 32 teams. As a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan and season-ticket holder, I’ve grown accustomed to the Eagles’ green messaging and programs. They’ve been at it very vocally for a few years now. So I assumed all of the NFL’s teams were just as vocal about it. Boy, was I wrong.

We’re Number One!

Green Life Smart Life

I don’t view green as an absolutist philosophy. There are shades of green, and that’s good. As the first and last word in disposable consumer culture, America has enormous and deep-seated habits that it must change, and all of those changes can’t, won’t and shouldn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and those leading the green charge must be encouraging to everyone who is trying to make small, positive changes in their lives and in their lifestyles.

Hating on Enviromentalism

I don’t get it. How can you call caring about the environment “earth-worshipping manure&# ? Or liberal happycrap? Do you have to be a liberal to care about the earth or eat local foods that taste great and don’t have chemicals? I mean I fully believe in the death penalty. Hell, I believe in an-eye-for-an-eye. I think welfare is for lazy people looking for handouts and women who aren’t smart enough to understand the concept of birth control.

Getting through the last of the local root vegetables requires some great recipes!

Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kohlrabi, asparagus, butternut squash, beets, broccoli, zuchini, I don’t discriminate. But at this time of the year, finding the fresh stuff gets tough and the ideas for new recipes get tougher. After combing the local farmer’s market on Saturday, all we had to pick from were the root veggies.
