Eco Chick’s Heroines for the Planet: Danielle Nierenberg
While we’ve seen extreme poverty and environmental degradation during our trip, we’ve also been impressed by the level of knowledge about things like hunger, climate change, HIV/AIDS and other issues from the farmers we meet. If it’s true that there are sayers and there are doers, Danielle Nierenberg falls firmly into the latter camp. Danielle is currently traveling through sub-saharan Africa to highlight stories of hope and success in sustainable agriculture and blogging about it at WorldWatch.org .

Cut meat, cut carbon? Agri-environment debate more complex, say experts
quot; Stopping eating meat tomorrow as a nation would also cause ripples around the world, he said, and may simply displace the problems. "In a world where we eat less meat it would be a lot easier to meet our commitments to the environment, animal welfare and social justice," he said. "But if we simply cut back we might end up causing as much harm as good." by Michael Smith (Veshengro) The environmental arguments for eating less meat are pretty clear-cut – less livestock means less deforestation, less water use and less greenhouse gas emissions – so claim those that would want us to get rid of livestock farming or at least reduce it. But, according to the executive director of the Food Ethics Council, it's a more complex problem than the soundbites suggest. Speaking at a Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum seminar in December 2009, Dr Tom MacMillan outlined how the practicalities of cutting our environmental impact by cutting down on

The meeting, in the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, between August 10 and 14, 2009 will see about 1000 officials in high level talks. The meeting aims to prepare a clear road for a new UN climate treaty to be discussed and adopted in Copenhagen this December. © 200 by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Environmental movers and shakers, though not of the Religious Society by the same name, I should think, from almost 200 countries around the world have gathered in Bonn, Germany, to discuss all manner of green issues.

Before Meets After: Backyard Makeover
Someone once asked me at a booksigning if I actually write my own books. Or if I actually produce my own photo shoots. Or write my own TV scripts. Really?? I think this is the #1 reason why I’m putting together a reality show ; yes, I do all of this and I’m there side-by-side with our team of stylists and producers doing everything from painting to scooping up rat poop.

Biogas must play bigger role in meeting energy needs
by Michael Smith (Veshengro) Gas produced from the anaerobic digestion of waste could be meeting 10% of the UK's energy needs within the next ten years. This is the claim of the trade body representing the industry, which argues its potential is being massively underused in the UK at the moment. Anaerobic digestion is a mature technology, with thousands of facilities up and running in European countries with a better track record at dealing with waste, but currently there are only 30 or so plants operating in the UK. The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA) is arguing

Can you Dig it? Meeting Community Demand for Allotments
public/2009/can-you-dig-it-meeting-community-demand-for-allotments/ © 201 by Michael Smith (Veshengro) This is the title of a report by the NEW LOCAL GOVERNMENT NETWORK published September 14, 2009, authored by Nick Hope and Victoria Ellis, which has only come to our attention now, where the Government is urged to dramatically expand the number of public allotments by building on brownfield sites and encouraging landowners to donate unused holdings to their local community. With 100,000 people currently on a waiting list for an allotment, the New Local Government Network (NLGN) is calling for the Government and local councils to make better use of the estimated
